Islam does not admit of Reformation
Pastorius responded to my predictions of the results of the Pope's death. He said regarding my point #2,
I responded thus:
The Koran, Hadiths, and Suras portray the "ideal man of Islam" to be a child-molesting murdering schizophrenic.
The Koran admits of no reform, for any deviation from it renders one an unbeliever. Unlike Christianity, in which Catholics recognize that Protestants are their fellow travelers, each sect of Islam views each other sect as kafir. The kafir, I remind you, are not only given no rights under Allah a muslim is bound to respect, but they are repeatedly called for oppression and death in the Koran.
Furthermore, the Koran, in describing G-d, uses a different Arabic word for Allah and for G-d. It explicitly states that the god of Islam is not the god of Judaism/Christianity.
The Torah does not provide for reformation of itself. The Torah does not call for the Talmud, or for the ongoing discussions of the Rabbi's through the ages.
The Torah is the Law of God, dictated directly and perfectly to Moses, just as the Koran is the word of Allah, dictated to Mohammed.
I responded thus:
The Jews and the Christians do not emulate their past practices for their own sake. Jews are proud to say, "we have learned, and no longer do as we did thousands of years ago. We were once polytheists, when we were as children. We are grown now." Christians are proud to say they have learned enough not to burn witches.
Islam does not admit of such change. One small example: the determination of night. Jews used to use the "white string" method, until the more accurate method of calculation became possible. They now calculate the exact minute night falls. Muslims still use the string method, because "that is the way it is done." The Jews recognize that once this practice was the best they could do, but humans have learned enough that it is obsolete.
The key thing about reform is that it not disturb the core tenets of a religion. Animal sacrifice and stoning of witches are not core tenets of Christianity and Judaism. The Protestant Reformation led Christianity to adopt a set of beliefs more resonant with what Christ believed- it removed centuries of sludge built up by a Church which inculcated ignorance.
What would a reform of Islam require?
The Reformation led to a more accurate portrayal of Christ and his message. People were encouraged to understand and emulate his gentle actions. The Reformation required an acceptance of the morals by which Christ lived, and a rejection of the morals attributed to him by a stagnant Church. The founder of Islam was a serial rapist, warrior, and murderer: a reformation would require the rejection of the morals by which he lived.
The Reformation required that all believers learn and understand the Bible and apocrypha for themselves. They were to see for themselves the acts of Christ and others. They were to accept the message of the Bible directly, not as filtered through the Church. A casual study of just the Koran shows a series of murderous decisions, hateful rants, and calls for oppression: a reformation would require that the actions of the characters in the Koran be condemned as evil, and the proper morality learned from their sins.
The Hadiths, describing Muhammed's semen-soaked clothing, rape of Aisha, torture of Jews, rape of captured women, slaughter of villages, and numerous pointless episodes, must be rejected in their entirety. Understand this: the life of Muhammad would have to be rejected. There is no thread of decency in his life, no model to emulate in Muhammad. You cannot make a Christ out of a pedophile. A reformation would require the absolute rejection of the life of Muhammad.
The Reformation called for Christians to re-examine their history and see how the message of Christ was perverted. The history of Islam is as bloody after Muhammad as it was during his life: a reformation would require the rejection of all of Islamic history as a continuation of the hateful life of Muhammad.
In short, whereas the Reformation required the acceptance of Christ's message and the knowledge of how it was perverted, a reformation in Islam would require the rejection of Muhammad and the knowledge that his ideas produced millenia of hatred and violence.
